'Is this part of the trade deal with the UK?': Britons are left baffled after Burger King Japan launches a new chip butty advertised as a 'Fake Burger'
British foodies have been left unimpressed after Burger King Japan launched a 'Fake Burger' which bares a striking resemblance to a chip butty. The carb-loaded treat, which has been introduced onto the fast food giant's menu in Japan for 290 yen (£2.12), has left some Twitter users baffled dubbing it 'disgusting' while others said they couldn't wait to try .
'A chip butty does not come from Burger King. It comes from a dubious looking van parked strategically close to closing pubs. And the bun is bigger. That makes it entirely different!' commented UK astrophysicist Elizabeth Tasker, who lives in Japan and tried the treat.
It comes after Burger King's New Zealand branch also trialled a chip butty in stores in February, which resulted British Twitter users' amusement over Americans' excitement at the dish.
While the British classic is usually served with ketchup, brown sauce or chip shop curry sauce, Burger King Japan's version of the chip butty, comes in a sesame bun and is topped with a special meat sauce topping which contains a mix of mayonnaise and minced beef.
The so-called 'fake burger' can also be served as part of a set deal for 590 yen (£4.32), which comes with a side of chips, for those who want a double serving of chips.
Taking to Twitter, many were left confused by the new menu item.
'I'm kinda amazed that no fast food place has done this before,' said one.
'So Burger King in Japan can sell a chip butty but they sell it with a meat sauce so its not even vegetarian,' added another.
'Burger King have just released the "Fake Burger" here in Japan, with Hokkaido French fries, and meat sauce in a sesame seed bun. AKA the chip butty in Liverpool,' added a third.
